Embodied Presence: The Transformative Pleasures of Love, Sex, and Playful Abandon (Stella Resnick, PhD)
November 11 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pmFree
Embodied presence is the state of being fully attuned to your inner bodymind experience in the present moment and it is the essence of Gestalt therapy. Recent studies from developmental neuroscience, attachment theory, relational neurobiology, and research in evidence-based practice corroborate this quality of presence as being one of the key qualities in the therapist-client interaction that promotes lasting positive change in therapy.
What makes embodied presence so healing is that developing present-centered skills enables us to be tuned in to where we hold pain in the body, to make the connection between pain and withheld emotions and to support the safe expression of suppressed feelings in a self-affirming way. This process is always experienced as a genuine pleasure, a joyful re-alignment with our true selves. In fact, it’s not just the release of pain that holds the key to lasting change but studies show it is the return of our capacity for pleasurable experience and playfulness that re-wires our brain, releases chronic bodily tensions, affirms and integrates the authentic self, and is truly transformative.
This presentation will explore how the capacity for pleasure heals old wounds and present difficulties in maintaining love and sustaining sexual interest in intimate relationships. We will experience together methods for attaining embodied presence through conscious breathing practices, attunement to the five ordinary senses, the sixth sense of interoceptive awareness, the seventh sexual sense, and the eighth spiritual sense.
